As a child my parents would not let me have a Barbie that wasn't some hue of brown. Although  I never remember having a strong desire for a Barbie doll that didn't look like me I do recall receiving  Barbies void of color for Christmas and Birthdays from friends and relatives that disappeared as quickly as I unwrapped them. Years later I understand the rationale behind my parents ways, they wanted me surrounded by images that reflected me, at least the images that they could control.
